Hypnotherapy is becoming increasingly more popular as a very effective strategy for maintaining a healthy long term weight. Hypnosis is a very powerful tool for changing your relationship with food to help you reduce your weight. During hypnosis, your mind is more responsive to suggestions to influence your beliefs and behaviours to help you reach your weight management goals.


In the U.K, the majority of adults are overweight or obese; 67% of men and 60% of women (figures obtained from NHS digital, 2020). Being overweight is associated with many health problems such as various cancers, heart disease, stroke, fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, respiratory problems, premature ageing, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis.


There are many reasons why people are overweight from eating the wrong types of foods to lack of exercise, comfort eating, binge eating and unhealthy lifestyle habits such as excessive drinking. It’s also important to bear in mind that some medications such as antidepressants and antihistamines can cause weight gain. In addition, hormones and vitamin D deficiency can also play a role in affecting your weight. It is therefore really important that anyone who is contemplating weight reduction should seek advice from their general practitioner first to rule out any medical complications and check that any new lifestyle plan is appropriate and safe for them.


What are the benefits of weight reduction?


There are many benefits to weight reduction including feeling more energetic, enhanced self-confidence and self-esteem, improved self-image, better sleep, improved sex drive and better relationships. In addition, the risk of many diseases associated with obesity such as type 2 diabetes will be greatly reduced.


How can hypnotherapy help you manage your weight?


Hypnosis is much more effective than diet and exercise alone for weight management problems. This is because hypnotherapy works on dealing with the underlying causes related to difficulties in losing weight such as improving your eating habits, overcoming emotional eating triggers, coping with snacking, dealing with your beliefs about weight loss and improving your motivation to reduce weight. Many people go through periods of yo yo dieting (a term used to describe a pattern of losing weight, regaining it and then dieting again). Hypnotherapy is also a great tool for exploring the underlying reasons for being unable to sustain weight loss and helping you to achieve your long term goals.


My weight management hypnotherapy program is based on the “Why” program, which has been successfully used in the United States to help many people reduce their weight. The sessions cover a range of issues including dealing with client motivation, making healthier food choices, improved body image, dealing with emotional eating, self-control for over eating and motivation to exercise. There is an optional gastric band weight reduction session which is completely safe and without all the pain and trauma of having surgery although this approach is not suitable for everyone. In addition, there is homework in between sessions such as completing a food diary and you will learn a great technique to ensure you become a mindful eater. All of the sessions are individually tailored towards the client’s specific needs, since every client has a different relationship with food.
