Having a fear of public speaking is very common. Modern lifestyles mean we are less likely to find ourselves in public situations. Much of our free time is spent
in the comfort of our home or online. At work, more people are utilising email so there is less need to speak in front of an audience. This means that when public speaking situations arise, understandably people can feel anxious.
For some people this anxiety develops into a phobia, known as glossophobia. This type of phobia is linked to social anxiety and social phobia. Glossophobia is caused by a fear of being judged , which can be triggered when lots of people are paying attention to us. This combined with self doubts over your ability to deliver can feel overwhelming.
Fear of public speaking can be reinforced if we make mistakes. Even if we only make one small mistake when speaking, our minds tends to focus on this. Symptoms of glossophobia include avoiding situations where we are required to speak in front of a group, feelings of panic when asked to speak in public, nausea, anxiety, palpitations, shaking and dry mouth.
Experiencing a little anxiety when speaking in public is normal but if the anxiety overwhelms you and holds you back then it’s time to seek help. The good news is that hypnotherapy is highly effective for dealing with fear of public speaking. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious part of your mind to locate where the root anxiety comes from and can use suggestion techniques to rectify the problem. Suggestion and visualisation techniques can also be employed to instill positive thinking, boost confidence and reduce anxiety. This will enable you to feel calm and in control when you are required to speak in public. I use all of the latest hypnosis techniques and offer a free consultation so please don’t hesitate to contact me today.
