Insomnia is having trouble sleeping. Some people struggle getting to sleep, while others have difficulty staying asleep or waking early. In general, most adults require between 7 and 9 hours sleep per night but some people can survive on much less.
Insomnia is caused by many issues including lifestyle factors such as poor diet, drinking excess caffeine, alcohol use, recreational drug use, noise and an uncomfortable sleeping environment. Some prescription medications can also interfere with sleep. In modern society, many people use some kind of electronic device during the hour before bedtime and this can make it harder to fall asleep. Reading a work email at 10 pm can keep you wide awake with stress and due to the blue light from the screens which mimics daylight and stimulates the brain.
Insomnia is often caused by psychological issues such as stress, anxiety and depression particularly if the problem has been on going for some time. G.P.s are often quick to treat insomnia with sleeping tablets but these are highly addictive if taken for longer than a few weeks and don’t resolve the underlying issue. Over time, chronic insomnia can have a very debilitating impact on an individual’s mental health and physical well being.
