An international research journal known as the BMJ has reported a number of studies highlighting that hypnotherapy is a very effective treatment for anxiety related problems and suggesting that the number of sessions required is often shorter and outcomes are greater than in comparison to other treatments available such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Anxiety is a very common problem involving worry, fear, apprehension or state of unease. It affects everyone differently. Typical symptoms include sweating, hot flushes, palpitations, feeling restless, headaches, nausea, upset stomach, lack of appetite or overeating and insomnia. Anxiety can make you feel very tense, unable to relax and ruminating is common. Severe anxiety can have a very debilitating affect. For some people, anxiety is temporary and related to a particular situation such as relationship problems, job insecurity or health concerns. For others, it is experienced on a daily basis and may be related to underlying trauma.

What causes an anxiety?

The most common causes of anxiety include stress at work, difficulties within personal relationships, financial worries, health concerns and traumatic life events. Anxiety can sometimes be linked to difficulties stemming from early childhood but lifestyle factors such as alcohol misuse, illicit drug use and caffeine also play a role. Some prescription medications such as corticosteroids and thyroid treatments can cause anxiety symptoms so it is important to speak to your doctor to rule out any medical complications first.

How can hypnotherapy help with anxiety?

Hypnotherapy can help with most anxiety related conditions such as phobias, fears, social anxiety disorder, obsessional compulsive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder. Hypnosis is very effective for promoting relaxation techniques and teaching clients self-hypnosis to enable them to have greater control over managing anxiety.

As hypnosis works with the subconscious part of the mind, it can be used to change underlying beliefs and behaviours that may contribute towards anxiety and

reframe past traumatic life events. The latest research from the BMJ journal also suggests that hypnotherapy clients usually require fewer sessions in comparison to other psychological treatments for anxiety.

I offer all clients an initial consultation and most clients will benefit from a package of sessions in order to successfully treat anxiety. The number of sessions required will depend on your individual circumstances and the complexity of your issues. I use a number of different approaches to help clients with anxiety such as Regression Therapy, NLP techniques, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy and teaching clients self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques.
