Addiction is defined as not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful for you. Being addicted to something means that not having it causes withdrawal symptoms or a ‘come down’. Because this can be unpleasant, it’s often easier to continue maintaining the addiction and so the cycle continues. Addiction is most commonly associated with gambling, illicit drugs, alcohol and smoking but it’s possible to be addicted to just about anything including work, food, computer games, shopping, exercise, sex, pornography and prescription medications.
Hypnotherapy is a very powerful tool for resolving addictions as it works with the subconscious part of your mind. During hypnosis, your mind is more open to suggestions and it is possible to change your beliefs and behaviours and deal with the underlying cause of the addiction to enable you to live an addiction free future.
What are the causes of addictions?
There are many reasons why addictions occur. For example, in the case of drugs such as cocaine or heroin, these substances are often used experimentally during the beginning to change the persons’ mindset. The pleasurable feelings derived can create a powerful urge to use the substances again. Gambling may lead to a similar mental ‘high’ after a win, followed by a strong urge to try again to recreate that feeling. This can develop into a habit that becomes difficult to cease.
For other people, addiction can be a way of coping with stress or blocking out unpleasant memories associated with traumatic life events. Some research suggests addictions can be genetic but environmental factors such as being around other people with addictions can play an important role.
The strain of managing an addiction can have a serious impact on your life. For instance, in the case of using illicit drugs, the addiction can have serious psychological and physical effects.
How can hypnotherapy help with addictions?
Hypnotherapy is increasing becoming recognised as a valuable aid for helping people to overcome addictions. Hypnosis involves taking you into a deeply relaxed state, known as a hypnotic trance where your subconscious mind is more open to suggestions. This is where hypnotherapy can help to change your perspective on the addiction and modify the behaviours, habits and thought patterns that lead to the addiction.
The process of hypnotherapy is very relaxing and can help you to lower stress levels and enable you to feel better able to manage stress. As stress can often be a trigger for addictive behaviour, this can make a big difference.
Hypnotherapy can help in one session or may require a package of sessions and this will depend on the nature and severity of your addiction.
