Addiction is defined as not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful for you. Being addicted to something means that not having it causes withdrawal symptoms or a ‘come down’. Because this can be very unpleasant, it’s easier to continue maintaining the addiction and so the cycle continues. Addiction is most commonly associated with gambling, drugs, alcohol and smoking but it’s possible to be addicted to just about anything including work, internet, shopping, exercise, sex, prescription medications and food.

There are many reasons why addictions occur. For example, in the case of drugs such as cannabis and cocaine, these substances are often used experimentally in the beginning to change the person’s mindset. The pleasurable feelings derived can create a powerful urge to use the substances again. Gambling may lead to a similar mental ‘high’ after a win, followed by a strong urge to try again and recreate that feeling. This can develop into a habit that becomes very difficult to stop.

For other people, an addiction can be a way of coping with stress or blocking out unpleasant memories associated with traumatic life events. Some research suggests addictions can be genetic but environmental factors such as being around other people with addictions can play an important role.

The strain of managing an addiction can have a serious impact on your life. For instance, in the case of using drugs, the addiction can have serious psychological and physical effects.

I can help clients with most addictions including alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, heroin, gambling, prescription medication, food, pornography and sex. Hypnotherapy can help with addictions in various ways such as enabling the client to develop alternative coping strategies, make positive lifestyle changes and uncover the underlying root cause of the addiction to enable the client to move forward to an addiction free life. I use the latest hypnosis techniques including NLP, Regression Therapy and Parts Therapy. The sessions cover a range of issues which are adapted to the client’s individual needs including teaching the client relaxation and self hypnosis techniques, dealing with triggers, stress and anxiety management, managing withdrawal symptoms, increasing willpower, self-esteem and confidence work, relapse prevention and a healing the body session.
